Hi man,

You don't need a Midi Keyboard to produce music. You can try softwares like Cubase, FL Studio, Acid Pro, SONAR, REASON, and Project 5. (There are many good programs too, just do some search on Google.)

These are the few good ones which I can think of at this moment, check their demos or trail versions out, see you are comfortable with which program's layout. Then only invest the time and money to use the software.

You can get many video demos on Youtube, which people guide new producers like you through the basics.

I'm currently a SONAR user.

Msg me for my MSN, I'll see what I can do for you. Smile

Also if you have a good enough Mac Logic is good. Thats what Roby Rossini uses. Also Manovale Sonoro says cubase needs an external synth.

True. It's 2 thing only. Midi-keys & software. But without vocal...
And i think you need something from hardware also: not a bad sound card (some like Juli@ or e-mu for start), headphone (M-series), speakers to monitor. It's minimum-o-minimum

1. Sequencer. "Place" to work with yor tracks. Use FL for start. But if you wanna you can start from NUENDO...Ur choice

2. A lotsa VSTi, VST etc plugins...Start from free VST.

3. And check & check your favorite music to studyin'

Just 3 steps @ all Smile

The main things you need for making music are:

Samples

I think anyone will agree a good range of samples is key to making your own tunes..I suggest Vengeance & Vipzone samples as they work good with all electronic styles

Synths

If you ain't got synth you ain't got music..Synth is the most important part of your collection

If your using a VST host (FL Studio, Cubase etc) then Vst is what yah need

there are a good range of electronic sound synths but the best by far is Nexus..it has the next to pro touch and is easy to use..however a full song requires around 5-7 of them to opened..your pc better be fast!

Host

This may be the most confusing part of your journey but nonetheless you need a good host that you feel comfortable with , there are loads of hosts out there:

FL Studio
Cubase
Reason
Logic
Albeton

I cant remember them all

Fl Studio is your best bet to start with..It's cheap and just remember the UK's number 1 hit was produced on it!

After a while of FL i would get Reason as its a great thing to create your own sounds on from Hardcore kicks to the freshest leads

imo Synths tend to lack creativity..I mean whats better than some1 saying that sound you created is awesome as apposed to having to tell them thats its from a synth?

anyway i hope this helps a bit Wink

What are all the tools needed to produce it. Are there places that sell sound samples. Do you have to have some sort of synth to do this? I know you have to have one with Cubase. FL studio offers tons of samples. I would like to know your guys setups so I can eventually make it. What is a good sound card? I have an X-fi. the problem with making music is that you must spend too much money to make it Sad. I really don't want to pirate any of the software. My pc is within the requirements of doing it.

I'm not really good at all the other things you asked for but I know a lot about hardware..
As for what makes a good sound card it needs to have a decent processing unit and OpAmps (Operational Amplifiers) of best possible quality. I know X-Fi has a great processing unit in the 'X-Fi chip' but its OpAmps are a bit cheap because it's made for gaming and surround purposes and not music production or music listening in general. It is possible to desolder those OpAmps and resolder some new and better ones but it requires some skill. The alternative is to buy a new sound card intended for music production.. but if you haven't got some decent speakers too a new sound card wont do much.

I agree with CFE.
About good soundcard (Not expensive):

M-Audio Audiophile 2496 about 130$
ESI Julia about 160$
ECHO MIA MIDI about 200$

PLZ don't THINK ABOUT USB board! its TABOO!
FireWire or PCI is your choice
